27.02.2018 - News The 7th Car of the Year Election at the 88th Geneva International Motor Show

Traditionally the final voting and awarding of Car of the Year prize are held at the Geneva International Motor Show, just before the Press Days. The seven finalists underwent their final tests last week. The 7th awarding of this honour at Palexpo will be conducted by the new President of the Jury, the journalist from the German automobile magazine Stern, Frank Janssen. The ceremony will be reserved for accredited journalists, but can be followed by the general public live at www.gims.swiss and www.caroftheyear.org on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

The Car of the Year trophy is highly prized by automobile manufacturers. Established in 1964, it is the most prestigious award of its kind in Europe.

After the initial selection of candidates (37 models), and the first week of road tests (the « Tannistest » from Denmark in October 2017) then followed by numerous individual tests, the jury convened last week at the « Centre d’Essais et de Recherche Automobile » at Mortefontaine CERAM, near to Paris, for the last cycle of tests on the circuit and on public roads. The finalist manufacturers came together to explain the concept, the highlights and the advantages of the models they have proposed for the award. The cars that are still in the running are very different in terms of market segments and positioning, which makes the final result impossible to predict. The finalists are:

  • Alfa Romeo Stelvio
  • Audi A8
  • BMW 5 Series
  • Citroën C3 Aircross
  • Kia Stinger
  • Seat Ibiza
  • Volvo XC40

This reunion will also be the occasion for Hakan Matson, the main driver of the prize since 2009 and initiator of the award being presented at the Geneva International Motor Show, to pass on the role of President of the Jury to his fellow journalist Frank Janssen from the German magazine Stern.

Frank Janssen has been a member of the jury since 2001. With the support of his magazine, he has made a significant contribution to the reputation of this award through his excellent organisation of the different stages of selection and in producing all of the audio-visual material for the promotion of the election. “I am honoured by this nomination and proud to lead this organization which has distinguished itself by the total transparency of the voting process and the independence of its sponsors who have no relationship with the automobile industry” declared Frank Janssen.

The new presenter will be subject to the ultimate scrutiny as the members of the jury will allocate their 25 points to 5 of the 7 finalists, and the Master of Ceremonies will announce the final decision and award the prize to the winner at Palexpo on:

Monday, March 5, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

Hall C of the Congress Centre at Palexpo

This event is reserved for accredited media representatives for the Geneva International Motor Show plus representatives of the exhibitors at the Show. It will be televised live and direct to the websites of the Motor Show (www.gims.swiss) and the Car of the Year (www.caroftheyear.org), plus on Facebook at #GimsSwiss, which will allow the general public to follow the proceedings and to learn who the winner is at the same time it is officially announced.

Car of the Year is organised by the seven top magazines in Europe: Auto in Italy, Autocar in Great Britain, Autopista in Spain, Autovisie in the Netherlands, L’automobile Magazine in France, Stern in Germany, and Vi Blägare in Sweden. The jury consists of the 60 best journalists coming from 23 countries all over the world who convene in Europe to elect the winner.
