BMW: The X1 and X2 are going electric too

BMW continues with the electrification of its range.

The Bavarian carmaker’s range will be enhanced by two new rechargeable hybrid models. The Series 2 Active Tourer, 3, 5, 7, X3 and X5 will be joined by the X1 and X2 xDrive 25e.

The two SUVs are fitted with the same power plant, a 125 hp 1.5 l 3-cylinder petrol turbocharged engine developing 220 Nm, connected to the front wheels by a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 70 kW (95 hp) electric engine is mounted in the rear axle assembly and develops a torque of 165 Nm. The X1 and X2 have thus adopted an all-wheel drive system. The combined power of the two power plants provides 220 hp for a torque of 385 Nm. As regards performance, the X1 achieves 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 s with a top speed of 193 km/h as against 6.9 s and 195 km/h for the X2.

An autonomy of around 50 km

Thanks to their 10 kWh battery, the X1 and X2 xDrive 25e enable 100% electric autonomy reported to be between 54 and 57 km. Housed in the boot, where it takes up 55 litres of the loading capacity, it takes 5 hours to become fully recharged from a domestic socket. This is cut to around 3 hours with the BMW i Wallbox.

Several operating modes allow a combination of various modes of propulsion. By default, the “Auto eDrive” mode combines ICE and electric engines, without any intervention from the driver, so as to optimise emission-free driving. Relying on navigation data, the engine will cut in if this is more appropriate for the road profile.

“Max eDrive” mode uses electricity for as long as the battery charge is sufficient. Top speed is limited to 135 km/h.

Lastly, “Save Battery” mode uses the combustion engine and regenerative braking to save/charge the battery for subsequent electric use, for town-centre driving for example.
