There are several prerequisites for aspiring to the title: the car must have been on the European market for the last twelve months prior to the award of the trophy, they must have been sold in at least five European markets and production must run to at least 5000 vehicles per year.

The election process

After a first round in September in Denmark where 35 candidates were presented, the jury will narrow them down to 7 finalist models during a test campaign in Mortefontaine (France) in February 2020. In circuit and road trials, both during the day and at night, the experts will award marks for design, comfort, safety, environmental efficiency, road handling, performance, functionality and accreditation. Technical innovation and the quality/price ratio will also be taken into account.

The final vote will then be held and kept secret. Each member of the jury will award 25 points to at least 5 cars among the finalists, with a maximum of 10 points each. There will be no tie votes. The winning model for the 2020 prize will be unveiled in Geneva, at the opening of the GIMS, on 2 March 2020 at 3pm.
