Rinspeed: The future of urban mobility

The Swiss automobile manufacturer and designer Rinspeed has announced its new modular vehicle at the CES in Las Vegas.

Designed for the transport of goods as well as passengers, this autonomous electric shuttle could very well represent the future of urban mobility. The vehicle, named MetroSnap, complements the Snap and MicroSnap vehicles, announced by Rinspeed respectively in 2017 and 2018. The company describes its new shuttle as “a sustainable foundation for the transport of people and goods in the world of tomorrow”.

The MetroSnap is a 4-wheeled vehicle with a skateboard-like chassis. Specific modules can be automatically installed on the frame in record time thanks to an aviation-inspired technique. MetroSnap can reach speeds of up to 85 km/h, a reasonable speed for primarily urban driving. Because the batteries are distributed between both the chassis - “skateboard” - and the vehicle body - “pod”-, the charging process can take place without any loss of time, while cleaning or loading the “pod” for example.

Simplifying urban mobility

This innovation could in particular help fight city air pollution and traffic congestion. As Rinspeed's CEO Frank M. Rinderknecht asserts:

People desire more convenience and simplicity in their lives, and at Rinspeed we want to make it possible with our innovative transport solutions.

These shuttles are designed for both individuals and businesses: taxis, moving trucks, delivery services, road works,…the possibilities are endless. The MetroSnap could also be used for mobile food shops moving from one area to another.
Supported by artificial intelligence, the MetroSnap can be controlled via a mobile app.

Following its world premiere in Las Vegas, the MetroSnap will be on display in the Rinspeed stand at the GIMS 2020.
